Visiting Family and Friends in the UK
Spending time with family and friends is one of the most common reasons for visiting the UK. You may be planning a family reunion, attending a birthday or graduation, meeting a new grandchild or simply enjoying a holiday with loved ones. Whatever the occasion, understanding the visitor visa requirements and preparing the right evidence can help you present your application clearly.
Depending on your nationality and circumstances, you may need to apply for a UK Standard Visitor visa before travelling. This route generally allows visits of up to six months, subject to the permission granted. While visiting family or friends is a permitted purpose, you must still demonstrate that you meet the relevant requirements.
Who Can Apply to Visit Family and Friends?
You can apply for a Standard Visitor visa to visit relatives or friends living in the UK. Your host may be a British citizen, a person settled in the UK or someone with temporary permission to live here.
Having a relative or friend in the UK does not automatically mean that your application will be approved. The Home Office will assess your own circumstances, the purpose of your trip, how it will be funded and whether you intend to leave at the end of your visit.
Demonstrating That You Are a Genuine Visitor
Your application should explain who you intend to visit, the nature of your relationship, how long you plan to stay and where you will be accommodated. Your proposed arrangements should be realistic and consistent with your personal and financial circumstances.
The Home Office will consider whether you genuinely intend to make a temporary visit. This includes assessing your intention to return to your country of residence and whether your travel plans suggest that you are seeking to live in the UK through frequent or successive visits.
Your Financial Circumstances and Travel Costs
You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover the reasonable costs of your visit, including accommodation, day-to-day expenses and your return or onward journey. There is no single fixed bank balance that guarantees a successful application. Your finances will be considered in the context of your planned trip and your wider circumstances.
Supporting evidence should give a clear picture of your income, savings and financial commitments. Where your bank statements show large or unusual deposits, it may be necessary to explain their source and provide supporting documents. The information in your application form should be consistent with the financial evidence submitted.
Support from Family or Friends
A family member or friend may help pay for your trip, provide accommodation or cover some of your expenses. If you will receive this support, your application should explain what is being provided, your relationship with the person supporting you and their ability to honour those arrangements.
An invitation letter can help explain the purpose of your visit and your accommodation plans. Depending on the circumstances, supporting evidence may include information about your host’s immigration status, finances and accommodation. However, an invitation or an offer of financial support does not replace the need to demonstrate that you meet the visitor requirements yourself.
Showing Your Ties to Your Country of Residence
Your personal and economic ties to your country of residence can help demonstrate why you will return after your visit. Relevant circumstances may include employment, self-employment, business commitments, education, dependent family members and other ongoing responsibilities.
Every applicant’s circumstances are different. Being retired, unemployed or financially supported by someone else does not automatically prevent you from qualifying. What matters is providing an accurate explanation of your circumstances, supported by evidence appropriate to your situation.
